The John Saul Picnic and Vintage Fair at Castlemartyr Resort

A link with history and a fabulous day out!

Castlemartyr Resort in conjunction with Absolutely Fab Les is delighted to be hosting The John Saul Picnic and Vintage Fair on Bank Holiday Monday 1st August from 12 noon to 5pm.

Set to be one of Cork’s biggest ever vintage fairs offering fun, food & frolics for all the family, all with a very local and very vintage feel, a record-breaking number of vendors and exhibitors is expected, so it will be a busy, exciting and jam-packed day out!

History of John Saul

One of Castlemartyr’s most famous sons, Irish horticulturalist John Saul was born in Castlemartyr in 1819 and went on to have an influential and successful career as a highly respected horticulturalist in Washington D.C., responsible for the planning and development of the celebrated Mall and other public areas in the emerging capital city.

His grandfather, Barnabas Saul, and father, James Saul, had worked as gardeners on Castlemartyr Estate too, so to celebrate that connection with Castlemartyr Resort’s magnificent gardens, the first John Saul Picnic & Vintage Fair at Castlemartyr Resort will put those same gardens to the best possible use!

John Saul Picnic - The Event!

The John Saul Picnic will be ongoing through the wonderful gardens during the day, where guests can bring a blanket to spread and eat their own picnics or choose some fine foods & drinks being sold from the stalls full of fantastic fare!

Then wander through the stalls and displays, enjoying the colourful spectacle, with lots to see and do from vintage car parades to the excitement of a kids’ sports day, live music, dancing and entertainment to old style threshing, and of course, indoors in the Capel Suite at Castlemartyr Resort, the Absolutely Fab Les Vintage Fair featuring countless stalls of vintage-inspired crafts, vintage & retro fashion and accessories, vintage gifts, homeware, antiques and art to be perused!

The front fields at Castlemartyr Resort will be transformed into a children’s play area, with sports, puppet shows, face painters, hula hoop competitions and a Teddy Bears’ Hospital, where you can bring along your injured or damaged bruin and have him mended by the experts for a small donation.

This is an opportunity to appreciate the historical landscape surrounding Castlemartyr Resort in a different way, and the chance to linger a while for some great food, music, wit and roving entertainment, all with a vintage twist!
